THE RAINY SEASON

The northeast monsoon season arrives in our country at the end of each year. This is the time when we get a lot of rain. Most times we get so much rain that many parts of the country are flooded.

Floods cause inconvenience and hardship to the people. Roads are closed; communications interrupted and affected people evacuated to higher ground. There are some unfortunate people who are swept away by the raging waters and thus lose their lives.

If the floods get worse, crops are destroyed, houses crumble and many people reduced to poverty. The east coast of peninsular Malaysia bears the brunt of this monsoon. This is where most of the loss of life and property occur. The people on the west coast are luckier; the monsoon loses its ferocity by the time it arrives at the west still, life goes on. The floods recede in time and the people resume their normal living.
